Defunding Police Protects Migrant Communities
Police and Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) work together to strengthen the deportation machine and reinforce colonial borders. By defunding MPD, we can make DC safer for all community members, regardless of immigration status.
Protect migrant community members, especially Black migrants
When migrant community members in DC are arrested by police, they are often transferred to ICE detention and deported. Black migrants are more likely to be targeted, detained and deported by police and ICE. By defunding MPD, we can reduce entry points into the immigration prison and deportation pipeline.
Protect migrant street vendors
MPD frequently harasses street vendors selling food and goods to the community. Defunding MPD will protect not only migrant vendors’ livelihoods but also their safety, regardless of immigration status.
Fund relief for migrant families
Defunding MPD will allow us to invest in community programs that support migrants who are excluded from federal food and housing support, unemployment, and/or federal stimulus payments because of their or their family’s immigration status.
