Defunding Police Is Environmental Justice
Police don’t make our communities safe, but a healthy environment can. By defunding MPD, we can build a city that invests in a healthy environment and that creates safety for all.
Protect climate protestors
Police are always shutting down movements for climate justice, including Indigenous-led pipeline protests. By defunding police, we can fight more effectively for climate justice, a Green New Deal (or better yet, a Red Deal), and a Just Transition to a decarbonized economy.
Address environmental racism
Defunding MPD will give us the money to clean up Anacostia and Kenilworth; invest in safe, green spaces in overpoliced Black communities like Wards 7 and 8; and address water quality and lead exposure.
Support disaster relief
Natural disasters hurt Black and brown communities first and worst, and police exacerbate these disparities (see Hurricane Katrina).
Protect climate refugees
Redirect funding from police and ICE to directly address the climate crisis, including by caring for climate refugees.
Organize intersectionally
Showing up in solidarity with the movement to defund police will help further build trust and form the broad coalitions we’ll need to make big wins for the climate.
